Motivational Interviewing (MI), developed by clinical psychologists William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, is a directive, client-centered approach used to strengthen clients’ motivation for positive behaviour change by exploring and resolving feelings of ambivalence. MI is used hand-in-hand with the “Stages of Change” model (also known as the Transtheoretical Model), and different motivational interviewing techniques are recommended depending on the client’s stage of readiness for change.
Motivational Interviewing was first developed for work with problem drinkers, after findings indicated that the traditional methods of aggressive confrontation and/or direct persuasion with this population actually served to increase client resistance and reduce the probability of change. Research has since shown that the MI approach is effective in activating positive behaviour change for a wide range of concerns including (but not limited to) substance abuse, mental health problems, unhealthy relationships, diabetes management, smoking cessation, weight loss, unemployment and health care improvement.
This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the fundamental principles and techniques of motivational interviewing. Through discussions, demonstrations, and small and large group exercises, participants will also have an opportunity for hands-on practice and skill-building.
Who Should Attend?
Any helping professional or health-care professional who encounters clients that seem unmotivated or ambivalent about changing unhealthy behaviours. This introductory workshop will teach new skills to help facilitate positive behaviour change in these clients in particular.
You will receive:
CEU's and Certificates of Attendance
For those requiring a Certificate of Attendance, certificates will be issued upon successful completion of a post-training quiz with a minimum score of 75% (multiple attempts allowed). Certificates will indicate the number of direct education hours (12), not including breaks. Certificates may be used to qualify for eligibility for Continuing Education Credits from licensing boards and professional colleges; it is recommended that you contact your college or association to confirm its requirements and the workshop's eligibility for CEU's.
