Workshop Description

Ketamine is emerging as a powerful catalyst to accelerate the healing and recovery process in individuals suffering from a wide array of mental health symptoms.  Its use in psychotherapy has particularly been helpful with treatment resistant clients who have long-term, chronic and severe symptoms of mental illness – and who have been suffering for a very long time.  For many of these clients, where conventional medications and/or therapy approaches brought little to no relief, ketamine-assisted therapy has been effective, improving quality of life and - in some cases - leading to complete recovery.

Ketamine is legal for use in Canada and the United States and is typically delivered by a physician and therapist team. It is a dissociative anesthetic that can induce psychedelic effects and a window of increased neuroplasticity. Paired with psychotherapy, ketamine works to increase the client’s receptivity to treatment by interrupting the default mode network, quieting the stress response, helping to bypass the blocks to wellness and healing that are fear-based, and increasing clients’ optimism about and openness to the therapy process. Under the influence of ketamine, clients feel safer to explore past memories and experiences that previously felt intolerable to revisit.  In a way, ketamine helps to provide a safe container to “hold” the client so that they can do the necessary therapeutic work.  At the same time, new neural pathways are developed which lead to lasting changes including:

  • Increased capacity for emotion processing and emotion regulation
  • Decrease/remission in symptoms of mood disorders, anxiety issues, and eating disorders
  • Greater insight and awareness
  • Greater self-acceptance

This workshop will introduce Emotion-Focused Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EF-KAP) - a therapeutic model to support the application of psychedelic medicine in general, and with ketamine specifically. In this model, informed by emotion-focused treatment approaches, clinicians support their clients before, during and after the ketamine-assisted sessions to facilitate an experience that becomes integrated into their lives well beyond their time in the therapy room. The model also emphasizes caregiver involvement to further help with this aim.

Vignettes and videos will be presented to illustrate the preparation, ketamine dosing and adjunctive-psychotherapy sessions that make up the model.

You will learn:

  • The theory and research in support of EF-KAP, including foundations of emotion science and emotion-focused interventions.
  • Benefits and risks of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy
  • How to screen clients for appropriateness for EF-KAP
  • How to structure preparation sessions, dosing sessions and psychotherapeutic integration sessions
  • Strategies to increase supportive caregiver involvement including sample scripts and guidelines around dosing support and integration work
  • Next steps for those interested in applying EF-KAP in their own settings

You will receive:

  • Login details and instructions emailed in advance of the workshop
  • Downloadable handouts
  • Certificate of attendance upon successful completion of a brief online quiz (if desired)
  • Access to a recording of the workshop for a limited period of time after the workshop -  so if you can’t join live, need to take a break or simply want to re-watch your favourite parts, we’ve got you covered!
